Trip Indroduction

Helambu Trek is among the shorter treks to experience the life in the mountain villages and the beauty of the Himalayan mountain ranges. It is one of the nearest treks from the Kathmandu valley done in Langtang Region which is not yet touched by modernity. It is a perfect trek for those of you with time constraint in Nepal and yet wants to capture the beauty of the Himalayas before your return. The trek requires some moderate physical fitness as the path ascends and descends at places. It can also be accessed in winter season as the altitude rises only up to 3690m. Trekking in Helambu is always a good idea for your vacation in Nepal because it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

Helambu trekking begins from the cool Sundarijal, which can be reached in an hour from Kathmandu. You will find many kinds of flora and fauna, as you enter the Shivapuri National Park area. Throughout the forest trail, along with the ups and downs of the mountain, rice field terraces, you can view the great Himalayan mountain ranges encouraging you. To reach your destination you will have to trek through Chisopani, Kutumasang, Thadepani, Sermathang and ultimately Melamchi Pul Bazaar. From Kutumasang you can find rhododendrons blooming vividly if you visit in the spring season. Sermathang probably has the best view of sunrise and sunset cast at the Himalayan mountain ranges. Through all the villages you will be greeted warmly by the Sherpa Yolmo people. The people of Helambu mostly follow Tibetan Buddhism so you will find splendid Buddhist monasteries active with the chanting of the sacred scripts and traditional music with drum and trumpets. Himalayan Monk offers different packages like Langtang Gosainkunda Trek, Tamang Heritage Trek including Helambu Trek.

The Helambu trek is an ideal one as it offers the up close breathtaking view of the Himalayan mountain ranges, relaxing forest walk, an encounter with various types of birds and animals and inspiring culture and lifestyle of the Helambu people amidst the serene environment. As you reach higher up in the mountains you will be enthralled by the blooming colorful view of rhododendrons at every step of your journey.  As Helambu is located in the Langtang region, you will have the excellent view of the Langtang mountain range. Trek to Helambu Valley is more of a cultural and spiritual. The Hyolmo culture is the wonder of this region and it is what makes the trip so spectacular. The people are extremely friendly and make the visitors stay worth it. The lifestyle and tradition of the people of this region are highly influenced by Tibetan culture as they are (descendants) of Tibetan origins.

To enjoy and rejoice the memorable Helambu Trek and share the experience with Himalayan Monk Travels & Treks is worth your time and every penny. Join us for this trek and get the best out of your pursuit of adventure in the Himalayas full of diversity.

Accomodation

You will stay in a three-star hotel in Kathmandu as per B/B, probably in Thamel, a tourist hub in Kathmandu. The rooms are clean, spacious and simple with comfortable beds, along with attached bathrooms with hot water supply. The rooms are usually double bedrooms, but it can be supplemented with single rooms with additional fees. Most of our suggested hotels are located in peaceful inner parts of Thamel, surrounded by beautiful gardens. The hotels have in-house restaurant bars as well as spas. The restaurants provide popular courses over the world and also delicious local cuisines.

Accommodation during the Helambu trek includes lodging in guest houses or tea houses with basic furnished rooms and attached bathroom. Many lodges have the modern type sitting toilets attached with the room, but as we get further, the lodges get more basic with an only bed and a side table in the room and squat-type toilets, mostly common toilets, located outside the room. Hot water supply also depends on the location of the lodge/guest house. Most of the bathrooms have solar powered running hot water. We would discourage the use of hot water boiled over the fire woods that could cause some environmental concerns.

Meals

While you are in Kathmandu, meals include only breakfast. It depends on you whether you want to eat in the hotel or outside the hotel, all on your cost, and you choose where to eat and what to eat. Food in the city is not much to worry about as you will find every type of cuisine, form authentic Nepali to international dishes (continental, Italian, Tibetan, Indian, etc) around every corner of the city. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be on the basis on B/B in the city while it is included in the package during the trek.

A traditional meal during the trek is the favorite Dal-Bhat, cooked rice with lentil soup, along with freshly cooked vegetables and pickles.  You can have other dishes as per the menu of the hotel or lodge. Some lodges and guest houses have a lavish menu with new dishes to try including some western type food like pizza, chips, and pasta. Every tea house along the trek route serve you with refreshing Nepali milk tea, that you can alternate it with black tea, lemon tea or a more traditional type of tea made with ghee and salt along with snacks.

Travel season

Helambu Trek is best during spring and autumn season. The spring (March to May) is a warm period of the year with blossoming flowers, and more birds and animals available to spot during the trek. This is the season to view the glorious rhododendron forest in its full bloom. Autumn (September to mid-December) is also a good season as the weather is neither hot nor cold. There is a chill in the air with clear Himalayan mountain ranges, making the trek a pleasant and astounding walk through the mountains.  Although the winter season is also a good time to trek in the Helambu region, it is extremely cold during that may not be suitable for all visitors.

You can also view the peak along other peaks like Langtang Lirung and Rolwaling from the Tarke Ghyang village, as well as from the entire trail. We have an easy, almost a straight walk to another big village, Shermathang. We stroll around the village and view the panoramic vista of the Himalayan range around the village. We stay the night at the lodge.

Day 8: Trek from Shermathang to Melamchi Bazar (1900m; 3-4 hrs)

It is another easy trek from Shermathang, downhill through forest, streams, waterfalls and many Sherpa villages to reach Melamchi Bazar. Melamchi bazaar is inhabited many ethnicities with the majority of settled by Sherpas. You can view the river and tour the village. Stay the night in a lodge.
