Trip Indroduction

Round Annapurna trek, also known as the Annapurna Circuit trek is an overall package to explore the Himalayas of the Annapurna region and the culture of Gurungs, Magars, Tamang and Thakalis. As the name denotes, the trek will take you around the Annapurna region. It takes you through different landscapes from dense forests to cultivated valleys and river gorges to waterfalls. The trail extends from the low land villages with a warm hue to the barren cold land in the high altitudes of the Himalayas. This expedition has been managed to be completed in 12 days which would generally take up to 18 to 23 days. Thus, it will require much physical strength and mental preparation with the ability for adaptation in various altitudes. It is remarkably one of the most challenging trekking routes in Nepal. Himalayan Monk organizes different trekking programs in Annapurna Region like Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Mardi Himal Trek, Mardi Himal Yoga and Meditation Trek, Dhampus Village Trek, and Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek including Round Annapurna Trek.

The major attraction of Round Annapurna Trek – “Thorung La” is the highest pass in the world at an altitude of 5415m. Below the pass is the well worshiped Muktinath temple which is popular among both Hinduism and Buddhism followers. In the nearby premise of the Muktinath temple is the monastery giving off the salty smell which is the eternally burning flame above the underground water spring. Annapurna Circuit Trek also covers a trip around the turquoise blue Tilicho Lake in the Manang village and a walk along the mystic Marsyangdi River. Other wonderful villages to explore are Ghandruk and Ghorepani. Both provide wonderful, panoramic view of the Annapurna mountain range. The blooming colorful rhododendron flowers in the lush green forest are another scenic beauty of the all along the trail. The Annapurna region is very rich in fauna and flora. It is a habitat for more than 100 different types of animals and range of species of orchids and rhododendrons. The region is a wonderland for zoologists and botanists.

Along the trail of Round Annapurna trek, you will find that lifestyle of people vary from the place to place. You will also experience all sorts of places, from barren rocky mountains, snowy terrain, lush green grassland, crops, and apples cultivated gardens. You will find that the donkeys are the main means of transportation here in the remote areas of the Annapurna region, whereas long-haired sheep and yaks are used for milk and meat. The environment is very fresh and soothing without any pollution or noise. The people are also extremely warm-hearted. You will be welcomed for friendly interaction with them across all the villages. Annapurna Circuit is always a good idea for your vacation in Nepal because it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

The rooms are usually double bedrooms, but it can be supplemented with single rooms with additional fees. The hotels have in-house restaurant bars as well as spas. The restaurants provide popular courses over the world and also delicious local cuisines.

Accommodation during the Round Annapurna Trek includes lodging in guest houses or tea houses with basic furnished rooms and attached bathroom. Many lodges have the modern type sitting toilets attached with the room, but as we get further, the lodges get more basic with only bed and a side table in the room and squat-type toilets, mostly common toilets, located outside the rooms. Hot water supply also depends on the location of the lodge/guest house. Most of the bathrooms have solar powered running hot water. We would discourage the use of hot water boiled over the fire woods that could cause some environmental concerns.

Meals

Meals while you are in Kathmandu include only breakfast. It depends on you whether you want to eat in the hotel or outside the hotel, all on your cost, and you choose where to eat and what to eat. Food in the city is not much to worry about as you will find every type of cuisine, form authentic Nepali to international dishes (continental, Italian, Tibetan, Indian, etc) around every corner of the city. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be on the basis on B/B in the city while it is included in the package during the trek.

A traditional meal outside Kathmandu is the favorite Dal-bhat, cooked rice with lentil soup, along with freshly cooked vegetables and pickles.  You can have other dishes as per the menu of the hotel or lodge. Some lodges and guest houses have a lavish menu with new dishes to try including some western type food like pizza, chips, and pasta. Every tea house along the trek route serve you with refreshing Nepali milk tea, that you can alternate it with black tea, lemon tea or a more traditional type of tea made with ghee and salt along with snacks.

Travel season

Trek in the Annapurna region is best during spring and autumn season. The spring (March-May) is a warm period of the year with blossoming flowers, and more birds and animals available to spot during the trek. This is the season to view the glorious rhododendron forest in its full bloom. Autumn (September to mid-December) is also a good season as the weather is neither hot nor cold. There is a chill in the air with clear Himalayan mountain ranges, making the trek a pleasant and astounding walk through the mountains.

It is reasonable to not trek in the Himalayas during the winter as Himalayan Mountains experience heavy snowfalls during the winter seasons. It is also not advisable to trek during summer and monsoon season, but trekking during summer could be a boon to many botanists.

Day 1: Kathmandu to Besisahar (950m) to Dharapani (1860m)

We travel from Kathmandu to Besisahar, headquarter of Lamjung district. It takes 5 hours to drive through the highway, along with the rice field terrains and gorgeous rivers to reach Besisahar. Day 3: Trek from Chame to Pisang (3300m; 5hrs)

We have a beautiful morning amidst the snow-capped peaks around the Tilicho base camp. We can get the magnificent vista of the lake as well as the Annapurna Mountain and Tilicho peak from the viewpoint. During spring and summer seasons, the lake is merrily decorated with flowers at its edges. We feel blessed to be among the natural tranquility of the place. We return to the base camp and rest in the lodge.

Day 8: Tilicho Base camp to Manang and then to Ledar (4230m; 5 hrs)

We leave Tilicho base camp to return to Manang and continue to trek to Ledar for about 5 hours. We descend the other side to leave the Marsyangdi valley and then make a gradual ascend through the Teki village. We continue along the Jarsang Khola valley and as vegetation begin to get thinner we reach Ledar. We stay at a lodge in Ledar.

Day 9: Ledar to High camp (4800m; 4hrs)

After breakfast in Ledar, we begin the trek towards the high camp. The trail descends to a river and then we ascend after crossing it over a bridge. We reach Phedi at 4420m and after the total of 4 hours of walking, we reach the High camp. We stay the night in the lodge in the High Camp.

Day 10: High camp through Thorong Pass (5416m) to Jharkot (3600m; 8 hrs)

We trek early from High camp after viewing a beautiful sunrise moment. After 3 and half hours, we reach the Thorung Pass at an altitude of 5416m, which is the highest elevation in our trek. You can see the Great Barrier ridge, a Tibet like the plateau of the Manang region. We descend towards the holy Muktinath temple in Mustang, a revered destination by Hindus and Buddhists. After visiting the temple and touring the surrounding areas, we move to reach Jharkot and stay the night at a lodge to rest after a long day’s trek.

Day 11: Jharkot to Lupra and then to Jomsom (2800m; 5 hrs)

In the morning, we can tour the old village of Jharkot for a while. We descend through the Lupra village and further trek an hour to reach Jomsom.  We enjoy the unique diversity of the place with Tibetan settlements. Mustang region is populated by people of Tibetan origins and the ethnic group of Thakali people.  You can have a Thakali dish for dinner in Jomsom and then rest in the lodge.

Day 12: Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara then to Kathmandu.
