Trip Indroduction
Upper Dolpo Trek is always a good idea for your vacation in Nepal because it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller. Dolpo region is deemed as a land untouched by the modern world. Although it is the largest district of Nepal, it is the most under-developed region located in a very remote area with rugged terrain at the far western side of Nepal. Due to lack of access to the place, it is yet unexplored and thus, it has been able to keep its centuries-old culture and traditions intact. Trekking here in Dolpo is an amazing experience as it rewards with dramatic landscapes and unique environment. Although the geology is said to be the same as that of Tibet, the natural beauty of Doplo region surpasses the glorified roof of the world. It is also one of the regions which get very less rain, but, during the last quarter of each year, there is heavy snow, so the trekkers are to equip themselves with heavy duty tools if they are trekking in the winter season. Despite the harsh nature of the place, the sunrise and the sunset over the mountains, each blooming flower, tumbling pebbles and the melting snow, and not to miss the hospitality of the warm-hearted villagers make your journey a life-changing experience as quoted by Peter Matthiessen, “There shall none learn to live who hath not learned to die”, in his popular book, “The Snow Leopard”.
Upper Dolpo trek is a wild one so one should expect camping under the starry nights below the great Himalayas. During the trek, we come across some amazing places of Nepal, like the great Shey Phoksundo, the deepest lake situated at the highest altitude in the world. The route also passes through the mysterious Shey Gompa. People in the region practice centuries old Buddhism, Bonpo tradition, and Shamanism is still a daily ritual of the people living here. It is said that groups of nomads from Tibet had once migrated to Dolpo region and another migrated to the Mustang region at the same time. But now in the present, you can see the vast difference in the change in culture in both the regions. It is probably due to the exposure that the people of Mustang got from the silk route while the Dolpo region had been closed to outsiders until 1989. You will find fortified villages in the high mountains. If you come across the word “Dho Tarap” during your upper Dolpo trekking, it refers to the human settlement at the highest altitude in the world. So, people of Dolpo live in very high altitudes, where medicinal yarsa gumba, an exotic type of fungi, is also cultivated. The place is also famous for the Himalayan blue sheep and rare snow leopard. Since the Dolpo region is a rain-shadowed area, trekking in Dolpo region is also accessible during the Monsoon season (June to August). There are many varieties of flora and fauna that biologists yearn to explore them all.
Himalayan Monk organizes different trekking packages in different regions of Nepal like Upper Mustang Trek, Manaslu Circuit Trek, ABC Trek and many more. Remember Himalayan Monk Travels & Treks for your vacation in Nepal and make it the lifetime experience.
